India Usher attended Cambridge Regional College for three years from 2005 where she studied for a BTEC Diploma in Art and Design and then a National Diploma in Fashion with Textiles. During her time at the college she won two design competitions, one being a campaign against discrimination, after which her poster design was displayed around the college.
Indias success in Cambridge spurred her to take her education further and in 2008 she returned to college and attended the University of Lincoln for a three year degree in Fashion Studies. It has been a very valuable time for India, giving her a real insight into how the fashion industry works. She gained many skills during her college years which included sewing, pattern cutting, illustration, machine knitting and also the business side of fashion world.
Throughout Indias time at university she gained work experience in many different areas which included assisting with organizing the University fashion show in 2009 and 2010. India helped organise the event, fundraising and promotion of the show and welcoming and liaising with the VIP guests.
In 2010 India went on a University trip to New York which was an incredibly inspiring experience for her and gave her many ideas for her final collection. Central Park spurred her enthusiasm for the collection, which was based on enchantment in which saw her using a variety of fabrics including some of her own knitted pieces. Indias was thrilled to exhibit her work at the ‘Coming into Fashion Graduate Show’ at the University of Lincoln fashion week which was a particular highlight for her.
Recently India has gained experience in design studios where she focussed on quality control, stock levels, visiting PR companies, sewing, distribution, assisting with pattern cutting and delivering fabric samples to factories.
Since leaving university India has chosen a business path with a creative edge and believes working for By Caprice will help her to develop skills in her chosen sector. Indias role at By Caprice will be very varied and she is very much looking forward to the challenge and learning more about how the company works.
India says:
“I feel extremely privileged to be joining such a close-knit and welcoming team in a successful growing company. I really am thrilled to be joining the team at By Caprice and excited for what the future holds”.
